El Paso Tap Water — What the Data Says
A recent Environmental Working Group (EWG) assessment of El Paso's tap water found 18 contaminants detected at levels exceeding EWG health guidelines — even though the utility was in full legal compliance with federal standards.
That distinction matters. Federal legal limits for many contaminants haven't been updated in nearly 20 years.
Among the most concerning findings:
- Arsenic — detected at 4.07 ppb, exceeding EWG guidelines by 1,018x
- Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) — 21.2 ppb, exceeding guidelines by 141x
- HAA9 (disinfection byproducts) — 18.1 ppb, exceeding guidelines by 301x
- Hexavalent Chromium — 2.40 ppb, exceeding guidelines by 120x
All detected contaminants carry a potential cancer risk according to the EWG report.
